*Tacky hair
dolls is something new to me as a problem and it is undesirable to some.
The tackiness is not a problem for the dolls hair as it doesnt appear to damage it and it can be styled as is. Even dolls that are 'new in box' may have this problem.
If you love to collect, dress and play with your dolls and find one or more of them becoming a tacky-haired-doll there
are recipes out there on the internet and on Youtube to try. Results will vary according to the doll and the collector washing the doll's hair. They may not work for you but keep trying until you find a recipe you like. P
erseverance is key and it gives you a good reason to play hairstylist for a day!
I have sought out the dolls in my possession of this particular type (many of the fashionistas) that have this tackiness and here is MY recipe that seems to work to satisfy ME personally:
1) To immediately remove the 'tacky' feeling apply small amount (approx teaspoon) of oil to dry hair. More if you like. I'll use any vegetable oil/mineral oil. work it in well throughout separating the hairs. Remember how mom's used to remove gum from our hair with peanut butter? well, the idea is the same! Note: doll is best naked and limbs secure. I put doll in plastic bag and use rubber bands around it. Be careful when manipulating the doll if you love her :)
2) Next, liberally apply baking soda (others use baby powder but it can be too easily breathed in as it floats all over!) Work the soda into the oily hair and scalp and keep adding soda until the hair is caked and feels and looks dry and youve separated all of the hairs. best to work from scalp to ends. Wash YOUR hands.
Now, take a coffee break and have some peanut butter on toast! ;) Note: Baking soda has been used for years for its absorbent properties. Oil stain on concrete? Scrub it with baking soda and Dawn and it will be gone. Dawn alone wont do it! Are you getting it so far?
3) Dawn dishwashing detergent is then used to get out the soda and oil and I use a wide tooth doll Brush to brush the hair to detangle while it is still in the lather stage. Add water as necessary. It helps loosen the soda from the roots to the end of the hair and rinsed away. Lather -Brush -Rinse repeat if necessary. Wash YOUR hands if the dolls hair still feels tacky. It could just be your own hands that have become tacky feeling.
4) Blow dry on COOL setting separating the hairs with brush as you dry the hair completely. (Leaving to dry on it's own will allow the glue to continue to seep into damp hair.)
Extra tips/tricks:
*Separating the hairs
is important in the steps above.
*Dont use cream rinse
as this does damage to the hair eventually if left on.
*I like to do a final wash with Felsnaptha instead of a cream rinse.
(you can purchase this in the laundry detergent section ...it comes in the shape of a bar of soap usually on the TOP shelf because it really is the best for stains so its kind of hidden) It helps remove tack, oil, and makes her hair feel silky and easy to comb through during the lather stage and seems to make her hair shiny and bouncy again. Rub an end of the bar to damp hair. Work into Lather separating the hairs, brush through, then rinse thoroughly. Wash your hands then step 4 above.
*Try a DRY shampoo
on the inner hairs, brushing and separating the hairs after each spray. Do this on hair that may be a only a little bit tacky instead of
or in addition to
the steps above. It DOES work but using too much at very close inspection she might look like she has dandruff but it helps absorb tacky oily look and feel in her hair in the same way it does for us.
Note: Depending on you and your doll, you may have to repeat the steps soon or in the future. A type of glue used on these dolls seeps through and causes this. If you have a better faster easier miracle way to do this I'd love to know!
